In the past year, I have taught a class called the history of the sport in the United States Montgomery of the University. When we get to the 1980s, I show a slide of Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and David Stern to explain the explosive growth of the NBA. I asked the class if they can name all four people on the screen. Invariably, they can be named Magic, Bird, and Jordan, but the stern face has been recognized. By the time we do the unit, they understand that David Stern impact the game more than anyone not wearing shorts. Now, long-term NBA Commissioner has passed away at the age of 77, it is vital that we understand that his towering legacy.
As the stern was Commissioner in 1984, the League is only five years from having its finals shown on tape delay. Stern understood that the NBA will only go as far as its participants, as well as his tireless promotion of a new generation, turning them into icons. He is not ashamed to be an explosion of the 1980s, forms of music, hip-hop, into the Marketing Alliance. In other words, he used the black culture of the fast-track to the NBA growth. And it worked, put the ailing coalition in the forefront. NBA franchise from the value in the 10 to 20 billion dollars to more than a billion dollars today. Player salaries to rise sharply, because the Union become a global brand.
Stern also oversaw the formation of the WNBA and diversity initiatives, branding the NBA as a progressive, forward-looking mechanism. His handling of Magic Johnson’s 1991 announcement that he is AIDS positive to the incredible love and Grace. As the current NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who is directing the special, said that after learning of his death,”David the NBA in 1984 with the Alliance at a crossroads. However, over the past 30 years as Commissioner, he ushered in the modern global NBA. He launched a groundbreaking media and marketing partnerships, digital asset and Social Responsibility programme, has brought the game to billions of people around the world. Because of David, the NBA is truly a global brand—he’s not the only one of the greatest athletes sometimes is also one of the most influential business leaders of his generation.”
This is all true, but harsh, but not all of the sun and gingerbread. He justified the ruthless time in the negotiations the players Union and the Union for the protection of image as a safe movement for white, middle-class consumption. This dynamic ramp-up to high gear following the 1998-1999 player lockout. Stern won the battle for the Union after the cancellation of almost half of the season. He projects himself as a king of motion; biting, sarcastic and more brazen to implement his will on the players.
This is often performed by a ham-handed to patronize the way, totally not a big black the League will feel his instructions. The 2004″malice in the Palace”the fight between the members of the Indiana Pacers and the White fans of the Detroit Pistons, only to provoke more severe worry, the coalition is pushing a white audience. Brawl made a severe reaction, and even can be said, the reactionaries
This is serious people and the establishment of a more despised”dress code”in 2005, monitored, and subject to a fine based on what they wore when not on the court. He raised the age limit when officers can enter the Union, to prevent the 18-year-old young man entering high school graduation, having to wait until they are 20(revised to one year from high school.). This is also feeling some players such as racially motivated. As NBA player Jason Meyers O’neill, he came directly from high school, at the time said,”in the past two years, the Rookie of the year with a high school play. There are seven high school players in the All-Star game, so why do we even say an age limit? As a black guy, you think that’s why it’s the future. You don’t hear about it in baseball or hockey. Say you have to be 20, 21 to obtain Union, it is unconstitutional. If I can to the American war to 18, why can’t you play basketball for 48 minutes?”
David Stern also didn’t do anything, the best when the NBA insurgents, Craig Hodges and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was driven out of the sport for the behavior of the political. This is his legacy.
The 1998-1999 player lockout also contributed to the stern closer to the NBA title, with harmful results. The cause is still unknown, stern always does not move to the push-then-Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling off his perch and forcing him to sell his team. Pure prejudice as a franchise owner and in his private business Affairs as a slumlord is an open secret, but Stern had never seen treated this as a priority. Pure racism burst open in 2014, this year, Adam Silver as League Commissioner. Silver to take decisive action, partly to prevent a player revolt and forced Sterling to sell his precious team.
Then is the close relationship between David Stern and Seattle Supersonics owner Clay Bennett. Of course, the Sonics are no more. Stern assist them to move to Oklahoma City, because the people of Seattle refuse to vote for a new publicly funded arena. Stern is never shy about rubbing Seattle nose on the move, because if he was warning other fan base does not get between the Union and their taxpayers ‘ money. This is a completely punitive, the ugly a response to a fan base, a loyal supporter of the Sonics forty years. As loving memories of the harsh cascade down from the establishment media, the people of Seattle must remember that their love of NBA basketball torn apart, because Clay Bennett and David Stern want a few million dollars.
I will continue to teach about David Stern and his legacy. He should be studied and borne in mind by any interest of the movement. We need point of view, Adam Silver, Michael Jordan, the former WNBA Commissioner Val Ackerman, as well as all the sports line entity in the broadcast agreement with the NBA. However, we should also hear Craig Hodges, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, the fans in Seattle and everyone was injured under the weight of his reign.
